Detention Deputy Cadet ID- 9486

Detention Officer Recruit is the entry level class in the Detention Officer positions. This classification exists solely for those attending the Detention Academy and subsequent facility training. This position entails entry level security work in the custody, control, care and welfare of inmates in the Navajo County Detention Facility for the purposes of training to become Detention Officer I.
 
The Detention Officer Position is a great place to start a career in law enforcement. It allows you to gain training and experience while working. You will obtain on-the-job training, defensive tactics training and may receive firearms and taser training as well. This experience and knowledge may later assist you with testing for other positions within our department. The Detention Officer Position can be a fulfilling career, however not everyone is suited for this type of work. Please consider All aspects before applying. A successful applicant will be required to attend a 7-12 week academy for Detention Officers.

Essential Job Functions

·         Assists in the control, monitoring, movement and activities of inmates/detainees.
·         Maintains safety and security of the facility, personnel, visitors and inmates.
·         Assists with inmate/detainee counts to ensure accuracy of total populations.
·         Processes inmate bookings and releases, maintains other Detention Records.
·         Physically escorts inmates by vehicle or on foot.
·         Performs physical search of inmates and facility.
·         Performs general administrative duties.
·         Responds to emergency situations; assists with the restraint of detainees.


Knowledge and Skills


 
·         Interpersonal Skills; courtesy, tact and diplomacy are essential elements of the job.

·         Ability to understand, apply and follow rules, regulations, instructions, jail practices and procedures.

·         Ability to direct the activities of prisoners by speaking clearly and concisely in an authoritative manner.

·         Ability to maintain accurate records.

·         Ability to handle situations and activities which may be both physically and emotionally challenging.

Desirable Qualifications


Must have a High School Diploma or G.E.D.; AND be at least 18 years of age; AND successful completion of Detention Certification Academy training; AND ability to successfully pass polygraph, drug test, fingerprinting, physical and psychological test (Physical test includes, but is not limited to a 1.5 mile run, push-ups and sit-ups); AND must have a valid AZ driver's license.
