About the position

The Landfill Technician position at Ada County involves performing routine tasks related to the operation and maintenance of the Ada County Landfill. The role includes hazardous waste screening, environmental monitoring, and operating various motorized equipment. The technician will work under the supervision of the Landfill Operations Supervisor and is expected to handle routine problems independently as they arise. This position is essential for ensuring compliance with solid waste management regulations and maintaining a safe and efficient landfill environment for the community.

Responsibilities

  • Directs customer traffic and monitors customer activities at the landfill.
  • Screens incoming waste for hazardous materials in compliance with regulations.
  • Maintains records of waste screening activities.
  • Assists in general landfill repair and maintenance as directed by management.
  • Cleans and maintains landfill areas, including oil disposal and diversion areas.
  • Resolves customer complaints regarding landfill rules and regulations.
  • Transports construction/maintenance materials and diverted waste.
  • Operates various construction equipment including mini-excavators and dump trucks.
  • Serves as a deck traffic controller at the landfill.
  • Assists with construction activities related to landfill systems and road building.
  • Complies with safety policies and procedures, performing inspections of work sites and equipment.
  • Works collaboratively with other county departments and contractors.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Commercial Driver's License (CDL) preferred.
  • Knowledge of construction materials and methods.
  • Knowledge of safety policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of general maintenance, repair, and construction of facilities.
  • Ability to analyze situations and recommend solutions.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with others.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to safely perform all tasks.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with environmental monitoring and waste diversion activities.
  • Familiarity with landfill operations and regulations.
