Description

The City of Gulf Shores is now accepting applications for both entry level and lateral police officer positions to develop a roster of qualified candidates to fill future positions within the Police Department. We are located in South Alabama on the Gulf of Mexico. When fully staffed, our department consists of nearly 70 sworn officers. We offer various assignments within our agency to include: Patrol, Investigations, K-9, Field Training Officer, School Resource Officer, Narcotics, SWAT,  Beach/Bike Patrol, Marine Unit, Airport Unit, Traffic Unit, and Criminal Patrol Unit. 

Most out of state experienced officers we screen meet APOSTC requirements for a three week lateral academy. Those requirements can be viewed here: 

Applicants must be at least 21 years of age and able to pass a physical agility test. The Physical Agility test consists of: 1.5 mile run to be completed within 15 minutes 28 seconds, 25 sit ups to be completed within one minute and 22 push-ups to be completed within one minute.

Applicants will be notified by email if they are selected to attend the testing for Police Officer

Essential Job Functions

Enforces all federal and state laws and City ordinates relating to public safety and welfare: performs all duties in compliance with applicable policies, procedures, laws, regulation and standards of safety.

Performs routine patrol duties, including but not limited to patrolling assigned areas of the City, responding to emergency calls and/or public calls for assistance, investigating criminal incidents, apprehending and arresting suspects and violent persons, securing crime scenes, issuing traffic citations/summonses, conducting traffic stops, seizing property and/or criminal evidence, fingerprinting, photographing suspects, maintaining public
order, interrogating suspects, transporting prisoners and mentally ill patients, and performing related tasks.

Receives reviews, prepares and/or submits various documents, including incident reports, accident reports, booking reports, fingerprint cards, maintenance records, victim reports, evidence/property records and reports, traffic citations, use of force reports, and related documents.

Serves warrants, summonses, subpoenas, civil and other official papers.

Assists in criminal investigations.

Provides testimony and presents evidence in court; provides court security as required.

Performs duties related to crime prevention and community relations.

Provides information to and communicates with immediate supervisor, other department supervisors, coworkers, subordinates, other City personnel, other law enforcement agencies, emergency response department/agencies, court personnel, attorneys, suspects, victims, witnesses, complainants,
business/property owners, civic/community organizations, and the general public.

Assists with emergency rescue activities as needed.

Attends required training courses and seminars; participates in required activities.

Attends departmental meetings.

Processes prisoners entering the jail system by searching prisoners before entering jail areas, taking finger prints and taking photographs.

Minimum Qualifications Required

Education and Experience:


High School Education or Equivalent; and,
Up to 6 months of experience; or,
Any combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.

When assigned as Canine Handler, Narcotics Investigator or School Resource Officer:

       High School Education or Equivalent; and,
       Two years of police experience; or,
       Any combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions         of the job.

Licenses and Certifications:

Necessary- Valid Driver’s License, Alabama P.O.S.T. Certification, Firearms Qualification
Desirable- Drager Operator, CPR, Radar Operator, Taser Defense Stray
When assigned as Canine Handler:
Basic Canine Handler School
When assigned as Narcotics Investigator:
Basic Narcotics RCTA
When assigned as School Resource Officer:
School Resource Training, Drug Abuse Resistance Education
When assigned as Community Resource Officer:
Crime Prevention through Environmental Design (CPTED)
When Assigned as an SWAT Member:
Physically and mentally able to complete a competitive selection process
Must be able to successfully complete a basic tactical operator course
When Assigned as a Field Training Officer:
Must complete an approved Field Training Officer Course

 

Additional Position Information

IMPORTANT JOB FUNCTIONS:


Participates in surveillance and special operations as assigned.
Maintains assigned equipment and vehicles.
Performs other related duties as assigned.


When assigned as Juvenile Investigator:


Investigates crimes involving juvenile suspects and victims; interviews suspects and witnesses; collects evidence and process for court
Works closely with the Juvenile Court System, Adult Court System, District Attorney’s Office, and Baldwin County School
System, Department of Human Resources, City of Gulf Shores Schools.
Coordinates operations for juvenile drug cases and underage drinking enforcement.
Assist other divisions in juvenile matters.
Teach “The Parent Project” class and speak to various civic organizations about seen social issues.
Serves on the Baldwin County Community Alliance.
Meets with troubled teens and their parents; guide them to appropriate community resources.


When assigned as Narcotics Investigator:


Investigates the sales, use and/or manufacturing of illegal narcotics.
Keeps in contact with confidential informants for case management.
Conducts surveillance on narcotics suspects.


When assigned as School Resource Officer :


Provides a safe school setting by enforcing laws on all criminal activity arraigning from or reported by the local schools.
Deals with custody issues, criminal mischief, harassment, assault and rape.
Assists with Principal and School Staff in maintaining order during break, lunch and class changes.
Provides Police presence at extracurricular activities.
Provides a link between Police Department, school and the community.
Serves on the board for the Alabama School Resource Officers Association.


When assigned as Canine Handler:


Trains, prepares and deploys service dog to: track and apprehend individuals sought by Police, search buildings and/or areas for suspected criminals, locating evidence which has been abandoned or hidden, search and rescue of lost or missing persons, detection of illegal drugs, and handler protection
When off duty keeps dog groomed, fed, exercised, administers drugs for illness, transports to and from animal hospital or veterinarian, and continues training.
When assigned as Community Resource Officer:


Responsible for developing and implementing a variety of crime preventions, safety, and community relations programs for the Police department. Coordinates public meetings and special events and implement public information strategies.
Writes program policies, training manuals; designing, writing, and producing brochures, visual aids and other program documents.
Provides training and instruction to other law enforcement agencies and other organizations on community outreach techniques.
Communicates with the general public, media, community, church and civic organizations, public officials, management and other city employees, business owners, contractors, and vendors in order to coordinate a program, disseminate information and provide assistance. Provides presentations to various groups.
Plans, organizes, and directs the activities of the Volunteers in Police Service (VIPS) and Police Explorer Post. Supervises and evaluates the work of volunteer personnel. Prioritizes and assigns work to volunteers and prioritizes own work.


When Assigned as an SWAT Member:


Required to attend scheduled training. Will be subject to off duty call outs. Must maintain an acceptable level of physical fitness to carry out the requirements of the team.
Must maintain a level of firearms proficiency above the basic standard of the organization
Must be able to understand tactical concepts and work in a team environment. The employee must be able to contribute to the overall functioning of the team and be prepared to learn and grow into whatever task or role the team may require of them.
Enters into situations with a level of risk potentially higher than faced during the employee’s regular duties


When Assigned as a Field Training Officer:


Is responsible for the growth of new officers and the successful integration of both new and experienced recruits into the operations of the Patrol Division.
Provides training on a range of subjects including; constitutional law, department policies and procedures, officer safety, court procedures, successful interaction with the public, and a host of other aspects of police work.
Monitors new member trainees for successful growth or for areas where the trainees require improvement. Provides clear and usable feedback to the trainee, FTO coordinator, supervisors, and the command staff.

When assigned as a Public Safety Diver:


Attends required training. Will be subject to off duty call outs. Will work and operate in an aquatic environment with the potential hazards associated with that sort of work. Will frequently work in low light to near dark environments.
Must properly maintain all equipment and vehicles associated with the Diver Program. May be assigned to various roles and responsibilities as determined by the unit commander

When assigned as Accreditation and Standards Officer (reports directly to the Deputy Chief of Police):

Assists the CALEA Manager with continued compliance in accreditation.
Communicateswiththegeneralpublic,media,community,churchandcivicorganizations,publicofficials,managementand other city employees, business owners, contractors, and vendors in order to coordinate a program, disseminate information and provide assistance. Provides presentations to various groups.
Plans,organizes,anddirectstheactivitiesoftheVolunteersinPoliceService(VIPS) and Police Explorer Post. Supervises and evaluates the work of volunteer personnel. Prioritizes and assigns work to volunteers and prioritizes own work.
Reviews Use of Force documentation to ensure compliance with policy and procedure.
Conducts internal investigations as needed. Receives and routes officer complaints and compliments to the appropriate supervisor.

When assigned as CALEA Manager:


Responsible for the review/update/creation of written directives or policies to properly address each CALEA standard required to be met for accreditation.
Assigned as the custodian for the repository of documents required to be stored in order to meet CALEA standards.
Communicates updates and/or changes to Lexipol and CALEA to Command Staff in a timely manner in order to maintain CALEA standards.
In charge of setting time schedules for when mandatory reports are due per policy and CALEA requirements.
Works closely with division commanders and program coordinators in order to maintain up to date policies and procedures which they are directly in charge of.
Maintains Lexipol and presents updated and/or new polices to command staff in a timely manner for review and publication of approved polices.
Responsible for the publication of Daily Training Bulletins.
