RIDE-ALONG PROGRAM ID- 9074

General Description


The Sheriff's Office encourages community interest and involvement in the law enforcement process and allows citizens to ride as observers in Sheriff's Office patrol vehicles. Persons wishing to ride as observers must follow the protocol established below to ensure their safety and the safety of our deputies. Observers must be at least 18 years of age to participate (with the exception of Youth Deputies). A NOTARIZED Background Investigation Waiver (Download PDF reader) in the link provided must be submitted with the Ride-Along Application.

After submitting the Ride-Along Application with a notarized Background Waiver, applicants must make a fingerprint appointment. The SCSO offers public fingerprinting by appointment only on Mondays & Thursdays, excluding holidays, in the Sheriff’s Office main building located at 100 Eslinger Way, Sanford, FL. The Human Resources Division will contact each applicant to schedule fingerprinting upon passing the preliminary background.  

When the prospective participant comes in for fingerprinting, they will be asked to present their valid Florida Driver's License or other appropriate picture identification to verify identity. After background processing, prospective participants will then be emailed instructions to complete a Security Awareness course because of the CJI (Criminal Justice Information) you will be exposed to while in the vehicle with the Deputy. This course can be completed from any computer. Once the course is completed and the prospective participant is approved, Human Resources will forward the participant's contact information to the East, South, or North Region offices to schedule their Ride-Along.

Please note that observers are under the supervision of the employees with whom they ride. They are not allowed to: assist with criminal interrogations or physical confrontations; exit the vehicle except upon specific instructions, or possess a firearm or other weapon.

Minimum Qualifications


Applicants must be at least 18 years of age (with the exception of Youth Deputies)
Notarized Background Waiver (Download PDF reader) 
Ability to pass a background investigation
Complete fingerprinting at the Seminole County Sheriff's Office
Complete CJIS (Level 2) Security Awareness Training provided by Human Resources

External applicants for employment will submit to a thorough background investigation, which includes, but not limited to, past employment/education verification, driver license review, credit history, prior drug use history, arrest/conviction record, and computerized voice stress analysis (CVSA) testing. A certified examiner administers the CVSA with questions addressing illegal drug use and general questions of honesty and criminal history. Any dishonesty or deception on the Employment Application will disqualify your application.

The background investigation process may take 3-6 months depending upon the complexity of the applicant's background and position for which you've applied.  Applicants selected for employment will be provided a conditional offer and required to submit to a medical examination with drug screening.

Candidates must also comply with the  Agency’s current Tattoo and Body Ornamentation Policy. A copy of General Order 28 - Dress and Appearance can be accessed here (Download PDF reader). An applicant’s tattoos and body ornamentation must be disclosed at the time of application and will be documented as part of the agency’s review process, even if otherwise meeting the Agency’s policy.
 
Applicants not selected for employment will receive notification from the Human Resources Division, to include justification based on the following disqualifiers: negative background, failure to meet minimum qualifications as outlined in the specific job description, or any additional information discovered during the interview process. Applicants will be eligible to reapply with the Seminole County Sheriff's Office after one year from date of notification.
