Key job responsibilities

The Systems Development Engineer will be part of the Design and Development Engineering team within Global Engineering Services responsible for development of controls and software based solutions for material handling equipment. The Systems Development Engineer will be responsible for collaborating with conveyance and sorter manufacturers and internal teams to develop ground up innovative controls solutions that enable Amazon’s scale and performance within retrofits and greenfield projects. The Systems Development Engineer will be defining requirements and standards from individual work cells to large complex MHE integration across multiple vendors. They will develop solutions that will span across various equipment. The position will balance controls and software integration between internal and external stakeholders. This position will also provide deployment and commissioning support to achieve system performance in live applications.

The following roles and responsibilities are required for a successful Systems Development Engineer:

  • Prepare specifications and technical detail to fully define function on equipment
  • Develop PLC and IPC control level programming in ladder logic, structured text, C++, and Python
  • Define or develop embedded controls solutions to natively communicate with IPCs
  • Evaluate edge, cloud, on-premise controls architectures to build ground-up MHE controls solutions
  • Evaluate electrical and field bus designs to complete firm engineering of MHE solutions
  • Follow and enforce industrial network security requirements
  • Provide detailed analysis and testing of existing and new engineering solutions and components
  • Work with IT, FC Software and Operations Engineering to support new MHE systems deployments
  • Participate in concept solutions engineering and firm engineering of solutions
  • Provide technical documentation such as flow diagrams, conveyor and equipment layouts, installation details, and integration specifications
  • Support emulation and simulation modeling of material handling systems.
  • Support commissioning of new automation elements
  • Ensures adherence to all Health & Safety procedures. Be proactive in the raising of potential H&S issues and the development of personal safety awareness
  • Fully understand and ensure procedural adherence to industry operating standards such as the NEC and NFPA.
  • Document control system and equipment configuration changes and keep the documentation updated on the global project repository
  • Partner with all FC stakeholders in order to build effective relationships
  • This role requires 50% regional travel and availability to work from a corporate office when not traveling. Candidates should either live near or be willing to relocate within a reasonable commuting distance of the office. Relocation assistance may be provided.

The Concept Development & Design Team will support retrofit designs for first mile retrofits as well as controls & solutions development to be used for future projects.

Basic Qualifications

  • 5+ years of control system experience including PLC based controls design, development, implementation and support. E.g. Allen Bradley, Siemens, Codesys, Beckhoff
  • Experience with HMI/SCADA system applications. E.g. Allen Bradley, Schneider, C-More and Ignition
  • Experience with programming languages for runtime applications E.g. Python, C++, Rust
  • Experience with embedded systems development
  • Knowledge of real-time operating systems (RTOS)
  • Experience in design and/or support of material handling systems, flow and capacity.
  • Experience in industrial networking and communications including topology design and familiarity with TCP/IP and Fieldbus applications
  • Experience in reviewing electrical schematics, Autocad
  • Experience with control systems hardware including VFD’s, Servo Controllers, and digital and analog sensors

Preferred Qualifications

  • 4 year degree in engineering, or degree in other related technical discipline
  • Strong IPC based control systems experience, decentralized controls architectures, and cloud or edge compute controlling equipment
  • Understanding of memory management and optimization techniques
  • Experience with debugging tools and performance optimization
  • Knowledge of software design patterns and best practices

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $116,300/year in our lowest geographic market up to $201,200/year in our highest geographic market.
