About the position

The Data Engineer role at American Express focuses on supporting the GSG Automation Digital Operations and Support team by developing reporting tools and driving actionable business recommendations. The position involves analyzing data structures, identifying opportunities for operational improvements, and collaborating with various teams to enhance customer service through advanced data analysis and model deployment.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver a streamlined set of reporting tools that provide automation performance insights and enable direct follow-up action
  • Understand data structure, detect patterns, spot anomalies, test hypotheses, and check assumptions through descriptive statistics and graphical representations using Exploratory Data Analysis
  • Understand automation platform infrastructure/architecture and reporting frameworks to analyze process anomalies, identify gaps, and increase business value and performance
  • Partner with operations, product owners, technology teams, and operational partners to provide advanced data analysis and outstanding customer service
  • Regularly engage with business teams and tech teams to understand their needs or processes and operationalize a framework for deploying data models for servicing our customers
  • Identify opportunities to conduct UX research and generate value for the business
  • Test and deploy data models in production environment and regular maintenance of production variables
  • Engage with diverse teams to determine the most meaningful questions to ask of our data

Requirements

  • Knowledge and experience with SQL and Python
  • Experience in Big Data environments (Lumi/Cornerstone) and working with Non-Relational Databases
  • Strong quantitative, analytical, and structured problem-solving skills and experience applying them to solve business problems
  • Experience performing exploratory data analysis to drive business value or meet a goal
  • Ability to excel as a team player in a fast-paced, complex, ambiguous and agile business environment
  • Ability to prioritize well, communicate clearly and compellingly, and understand how to drive a high level of focus and excellence
  • Creativity and curiosity, with an appetite to learn
  • Excellent listening and communication skills; able to forge constructive relationships with partners from a variety of backgrounds and geographics

  • Proven ability to work with and analyze large data sets, including 3-5 years programming experience in SQL, Python and HQL or equivalent preferred
  • Experience with various automation tools and frameworks including ACE, Blue prism
  • Experience with data visualization tools such as Kibana, Tableau or Power BI
  • Experience with new emerging techniques machine learning algorithms (e.g., gradient boosting machine, XGBoost, neural network), artificial intelligence, deep learning as well as classic statistical modeling techniques and assumptions a plus
