The Humboldt County Library has an open position for a Librarian I/II in Adult Services. This position has a strong community focus and acts as Programming Coordinator for Adult Services and manages the Historical Collection hosted in the Humboldt Room. The ideal candidate will independently and collaboratively plan and develop many elements of library programming. This includes, but is not limited to, creating and disseminating programming advertisements, on-site coordinating for community partner programs, scheduling, and creating and hosting engaging library programs or events.
The Area

Humboldt County is a rural county located approximately 250 miles north of the Bay Area and 150 miles west of Redding. Outdoor recreational opportunities are abundant with numerous rivers, beaches, city parks, county parks, Bureau of Land Management public lands, numerous State Parks, and Redwood National Park. Residents enjoy hiking in the majestic redwoods, salmon fishing in the Klamath River, walking/biking on community trails, mountain biking in the hills, and surfing in the Pacific Ocean.
The Library
We serve the residents of Humboldt County. The Library is supported by property taxes and governed by the County Board of Supervisors. The Humboldt County Library System (HCL) consists of 11 libraries, a bookmobile, and the Library at Your Door program, which offers community-wide access to a diverse range of resources, including books, databases, magazines, audiobooks, movies, internet resources, as well as government and historical documents. The Eureka Library functions as the operational headquarters for HCL and serves as a distribution center for many of the materials and services that support the library system as a whole. This position is located in Eureka, CA.
A typical schedule for this position is Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday 8AM-5PM and Wednesday 11AM-8PM.
Under general supervision, performs routine to complex professional librarian work involving the selection, cataloging, circulation or reference use of library materials; provides varied library services to all age groups; performs related work as assigned.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Librarian I is the entry level class in the professional librarian series. Initially under close supervision, incumbents provide assistance and service to patrons while learning library policies, procedures and operations. As experience is gained, duties become more diversified and are performed under more general supervision. This class is alternately staffed with Librarian II, and incumbents may advance to the higher level after gaining experience and demonstrating proficiency which meet the qualifications for the higher level class.
Librarian II is the journey level class in this series, fully competent to perform difficult librarian work involving more complex services and tasks to patrons of all ages and requiring a thorough grasp of reference sources and search techniques, and a broader familiarity with technical processes and services available to library patrons. Direction of support staff may also be included. This class is distinguished from Supervising Librarian in that the latter is the first supervisory level in the librarian series with responsibility for system-wide ongoing special program development and implementation or major branch administration.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
- Assesses patron needs and advises them in making effective use of library resources and services; assists patrons of all ages by answering reference questions and selecting print and nonprint materials.
- Orients patrons to library procedures and practices and specialized information sources, specialized library material collections, and similar services.
- Prepares reading lists and bibliographies which may require the use of automated equipment and programs; develops and maintains special files and collections.
- Reviews, evaluates and selects materials for addition to or deletion from the collections.
- Plans and conducts library programs for all age groups; may plan and participate in special outreach, community services or related programs or projects.
- Interprets library policies and procedures to the public; may represent the library in meetings with citizens or special interest groups.
- Classifies and catalogs books and other materials.
- Prepares displays and visual materials as needed; prepares a variety of written materials.
- Monitors developments in the library services field; participates in professional association activities.
- May plan and direct the work of paraprofessional or support staff.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
- Principles and practices of professional library objectives, organization and procedures.
- Theory and philosophy of librarianship.
- Books, authors, reference sources and search techniques in a variety of areas.
- Basic supervisory principles and practices.
- Patron advisory methods and practices.
- Automated library information systems and equipment usage.
- Collection development, including book and materials selection.
- Cataloging and classifying procedures for varied materials.
Skill in:
- Assessing library patron needs and providing accurate service information.
- Planning and implementing specialized programs, including performing outreach work.
- Classifying and cataloging a wide range of books and library materials using both manual and computerized procedures.
- Planning, directing and reviewing the work of assigned staff.
- Maintaining accurate records and files.
- Preparing clear, accurate and concise written reports and correspondence.
- Preparing effective displays and other visual materials.
- Establishing and maintaining an effective working relationship with a variety of library patrons and others contacted in the course of the work.
Other Requirements:
Specified positions may require a valid California driver's license. Must be willing to work evenings and weekends.
Desirable Education and Experience:
A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills outlined above is:
Librarian I: Equivalent to graduation from a four year college or university, plus possession of a Master's degree in Library Science.
Librarian II: In addition to the above, one year of experience as a professional librarian at a level equivalent to the County's class of Librarian I.

MEDICAL EXAMINATION

PROBATIONARY PERIOD
Persons appointed to regular County positions serve a probationary period. This is normally six (6) months but could be up to one (1) year. All designated safety employees serve a one-year probationary period.

DISASTER SERVICE WORKERS
All County of Humboldt employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the County requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
